However, it’s not a joke…the Romanian team is back in the game, with more power, more ambition and more stamina than ever. And they have the two magicien coaches around the girls during the competition, as it happened back in the good days.

The five girls who brought the team gold home last night were:

- Diana Bulimar, a wonderful and valuable member of the team, who nailed her floor routine and did a great job on beam and bars. I love how she fights, I love the passion she has when encouraging the other girls during the competition and I love her smile on floor. I’ve been waiting so much for this Diana Bulimar - the one who almost nails her beam routine!!!

- Larisa Iordache, the wonderkid - everything looks so simple when performed by Larisa, she has potential, she has ambition, she is confident, she has the skills, she has everything to be a fierce competitor. All she needs is experience, but I’m sure she will have it by London. She is everywhere in this team, she can do almost anything, she is too great, honestly. I would so much like to see her reach 100% potential at least once in her gymnastics life. And I definitely hope she will stay on until 2016…she has too much to show and I’m not sure she will show everything in London.

- Sandra Izbasa, the best vaulter of the team at the moment! Even if she only performed on vault last night, she did it almost perfectly, especially considering her recent injuries. But what is more important is that I saw her supporting the girls and surprisingly being close to Catalina Ponor. It’s very clear for me: Sandra, Catalina, Larisa and Didi are the most fierce competitors our team could have!

- Raluca Haidu - she wasn’t perfect last night, but she just did her job. She surprisingly did her job and showed the coaches that she deserves that gold as much as the other girls do. She was cheering, she was there for her team mates - wonderful team player.

- Catalina Ponor - I had the feeling that these Europeans were all about Catalina…she IS definitely wonderful, with a great beam routine after the Larisa’s mistake, with a great DTY and a great floor routine. She was a leader, together with Sandra. She was the Catalina we all remember from 2004. She is so surprising that I cannot help wondering what is she going to surprise us with next.

- Diana Chelaru - she was so close to get into this team! She missed it this time, but she was in the stands supporting her team, she was there for them and she was what she always is: part of this team.

And then - there are the coaches and their magic. It was the first time the B&B couple stepped in the arena with the girls. They are the power of this team, they are the definitely the best couches in the world. They are technical coaches, they are managers, they are psycologists, they are parents and they are team setters. This is why they are so good. This was the first time since 2004 that I saw a TEAM there, and not only a bunch of girls going to do their job as fast as they could. That was a TEAM winning the TEAM european title. This is the most important thing!

All that happened last night was a moment that Romanian fans have waited since 2008, it was a fight that Romanian fans have been waiting to see since 2004 and it is a hope for the fight the Romanian fans are waiting to see in less than 100 days.

Let’s do it, Romania!!!!

Tot in finala de la paralele l-am mai avut si pe Andrei Muntean, care a terminat pe locul 8 cu 14.325. Iar la sarituri, Marius Berbecar a terminat ultimul din cauza unei ratari a sariturii dublu inainte grupat (dificultate 6.60).

Trebuie punctat faptul ca la acest concurs nu a participat si Sandra Izbasa. Aceasta a fost vazuta la incalzire, dar nu s-a mai prezentat la inceputul competitiei. Inca nu stim motivul, dar sa speram ca nu este nimic serios. De asemenea, Romania a mai avut-o in concurs si pe Raluca Haidu, dar aceasta a fost inscrisa individual, iar notele ei nu au intrat in calculul echipei.

(Andrei - 1st place and Youth Olympic Champion on SR)

His first steps towards elite gymnastics were guided by coaches Ciprian Baias and Carmen Rosianu at Sibiu. He then moved to the Junior National team located in Bistrita where he trained until he made the Senior National team and moved to Bucharest. He now trains with the Olympics in mind, his greatest desire being that of also becoming a Senior Olympic Champion. Andrei answered a few questions we prepared for him:

Fangymnastics: Hi Andrei! How are you? Everyone is looking forward to your debut in Senior competition. What are you expectations from 2012?

Andrei: Hi! I´m fine, still in Bucharest. I am looking forward to start competing as well, I hope I won´t let anyone down. My goals for this year are to improve on all apparatus and have good results!

Fangymnastics: 2009 and 2010 were your best competitive years. You medaled at the Junior European Championships, at the European Olympic Youth Festival and had your best results at the Singapore Youth Olympics. What did all these results mean to you?

Andrei: Yes, 2009 and 2010 were my best years. I obtained unexpected results which gave me more confidence and strength to keep going.

Fangymnastics: In the beginning of 2011 you moved from the Junior to the Senior team. What did moving to Bucharest change for you? How did you adjust to having new coaches, new colleagues and living in the capital?

Andrei: It didn’t actually feel like changing. I already knew my colleagues and coaches. I adjusted very fast to this new life also because of their help, they have always been supportive. Life in the capital is faster paced but I adapted easily and I like being here.

Fangymnastics: You didn´t compete in any national or international competition in 2011. As far as I know you were injured. Could you tell us what happened and how long you had to stop training?

Andrei: It wasn´t an actual injury. It was an older one which got worse and my coaches thought it was necessary for me to take a break. I don´t remember how long I stopped training but I spent most of the year recovering.

Fangymnastics: Are you healthy now? Does it still bother you? Can you train at your full capacity now?

Andrei: I still feel some pain but I believe any gymnast has this. I’m following a normal training program now.

Fangymnastics: You are about to compete in China (actuallu he competed last weekend in China) and Croatia (at the end of the month) on three apparatus: floor, parallel bars and rings. What do you expect from these competitions?

Andrei: I am currently training for the Chinese competition which will be held on the 7th and 8th of April. I will be doing rings and PB. Then I’ll compete in Croatia. Considering these are my first Senior competitions I want to do my best and, if possible, make the first 8 places.

Fangymnastics: The Europeans and the Olympics are next. Do you think you’ll make the team? Where do you think you will be able to help?

Andrei: If I stay healthy and train normally, I have a strong chance of making the team. I think I can help on rings and PB, but also on vault and floor.

Fangymnastics: You are about to graduate, right? Your summer will be a busy one. College is next, right? What are your plans from this point of view?

Andrei: Yes, I will graduate this year and I hope I’ll pass all the tests. I haven’t thought about what college I want to go to so far. I will probably attend a sports one but for the future I am thinking about marketing. We’ll see what the future holds…

Fangymnastics: Back to the apparatus. You’ve had your best results on PB and rings. Are these still your favorites? What are you working on? I suppose your routines have suffered modifications. Tell us a bit about that.

Andrei: Yes, they are still my favorites. I improved in difficulty to up my start values. I still want to improve on that on every apparatus to be able to compete with the best of them.

Fangymnastics: Is the public’s support important to you? I see you receive a lot of messages and you actually take time to reply to everyone. How do you see this communication with people that support you?

Andrei: I’m really glad to see that people support me when I compete nationally or internationally. I like communicating with them and of course, I try to make time for everyone.

Se poate mandri cu faptul ca este primul campion olimpic de tineret din istoria gimnasticii artistice din Romania. De asemenea a mai cucerit aurul continental la paralele, in intrecerile juniorilor din 2010. Aceste doua titluri vin ca o completare a tuturor celorlalte medalii de argint si bronz obtinute de-a lungul carierei. La un asemenea palmares, am putea avea impresia ca vorbim de un sportiv cu o cariera indelungata, nu? Nicidecum! Sportivul cu care am stat noi de vorba este de-abia la inceputul carierei, iar numele lui este… Andrei Vasile Muntean!

Primii pasi spre marea performanta i-a facut la Sibiu alaturi de domnul antrenor Ciprian Baias si de doamna Carmen Rosianu. Apoi a fost promovat la lotul national de juniori de la Bistrita, unde a stat pana in momentul in care a primit convocarea pentru lotul de seniori de la Bucuresti. Momentan se antreneaza cu gandul la Jocurile Olimpice, dorinta lui cea mai mare fiind aceea de a deveni campion olimpic si la seniori. Andrei ne-a raspuns la cateva intrebari, iar raspunsurile lui le puteti citi mai jos.

Fangymnastics: Salut, Andrei! Ce mai faci? Toata lumea asteapta debutul tau in competitiile seniorilor. Ce asteptari ai de la anul 2012?

Andrei: Salut! Sunt bine, tot la Bucuresti. Si eu astept cu nerabadare sa concurez si sper sa nu dezamagesc. Anul acesta imi doresc sa-mi imbunatatesc exercitiile la toate cele sase aparate si sa am rezultate cat mai bune!

Fangymnastics: 2009 si 2010 au fost, probabil, cei mai buni ani ai tai. Ai obtinut medalii la Campionatele Europene de juniori, la Festivalul Olimpic al Tineretului European si poate cele mai frumoase rezultate au venit din Singapore, acolo unde s-au tinut Jocurile Olimpice de Tineret. Ce au reprezentat pentru tine toate aceste rezultate?

Andrei: 2009 si 2010 au fost, intr-adevar, cei mai buni ani ai mei. Am avut rezultate la care nu ma asteptam, rezultate care mi-au dat mai multa incredere in mine si putere sa merg mai departe.

Fangymnastics: La inceputul anului 2011 ai facut trecerea de la lotul de juniori la cel de seniori. Ce s-a schimbat pentru tine odata cu venirea la Bucuresti? Cum a fost acomodarea cu noii antrenori, colegi, dar si cu viata din capitala?

Andrei: Foarte multe nu s-au schimbat. Pe colegi si antrenori ii cunosteam in mare parte. M-am acomodat destul de usor datorita lor pentru ca au fost, si inca sunt, alaturi de mine. Viata de capitala este mult mai agitata, dar m-am adaptat usor si chiar pot spune ca imi place mai mult aici.

Fangymnastics: De asemenea, in 2011, ai lipsit atat din competitiile nationale cat si din cele internationale. Din cate stiu ai suferit o accidentare. Ne poti spune despre ce a fost vorba si cat a trebuit sa faci pauza?

Andrei: Nu am suferit neaparat o accidentare. Am avut o problema mai veche care s-a agravat, iar antrenorii au considerat ca este mai bine sa fac pauza. Nu stiu exact cat am stat, dar cea mai mare parte a anului am petrecut-o facand recuperare.

Fangymnastics: In prezent care este starea ta de sanatate? Te mai deranjeaza ceva? Te poti antrena la capacitate maxima?

Andrei: In prezent mai am mici dureri, dar cred ca aceste dureri sunt prezente la orice sportiv de performanta. Cu toate acestea ma antrenez normal.

Fangymnastics: Am vazut ca urmeaza sa participi la doua concursuri: in China (saptamana aceasta) si Croatia (la sfarsitul lunii) unde vei lucra la trei aparate: sol, paralele si inele.  Ce asteptari ai de la aceste concursuri?

Andrei: Momentan ma pregatesc pentru concursul din China, care se va desfasura in perioda 07 - 08 aprilie si unde voi concura la inel si paralel. Dupa, va urma cel din Croatia si avand in vedere ca sunt primele mele concursuri la seniori, imi doresc sa am o executie cat mai buna si, de ce nu, o clasare in primele locuri.

Fangymnastics: Urmeaza Europenele si Jocurile Olimpice. Care crezi ca sunt sansele tale pentru a prinde echipa? Unde crezi ca poti ajuta echipa pentru a se clasa pe un loc cat mai bun?

Andrei: Sunt sanse mari sa prind echipa daca ma ajuta sanatatea si daca ma pot antrena normal. Cred ca pot sa ajut echipa la inel si paralel, dar si la sarituri si sol.

Fangymnastics: De asemenea, tot anul acesta urmeaza sa dai si BAC-ul, nu? O sa te astepte o vara plina. Urmeaza facultatea, nu? Ce planuri ai din acest punct de vedere?

Andrei: Da, urmeaza BAC-ul pe care sper sa-l trec cu bine. Momentan nu m-am gandit la ce facultate sa dau. Probabil voi merge la o facultate de sport, iar pe viitor ma gandesc sa merg si la o facultate de marketing. Vedem ce-mi rezerva viitorul…

Fangymnastics: Revenind putin la aparate. Paralelul si inelul ti-au adus cele mai importante rezultate ale carierei. In continuare acestea sunt aparatele tale preferate? Ce ne pregatesti pe viitor? Presupun ca exercitiile tale au suferit cateva modificari. Povesteste-ne putin.

Andrei: Da, au ramas in continuare aparatele mele favorite. Am crescut la dificultate, iar nota de plecare este mai mare. Pe viitor imi doresc sa mai cresc in dificultate la fiecare aparat pentru a ma putea intrece cu cei mai buni.

Fangymnastics: Cat de mult inseamna pentru tine sprijinul celor din public, care te incurajeaza concurs de concurs? Am vazut ca primesti foarte multe mesaje de incurajare/felicitare. Mai mult decat atat, a fost frumos sa vad ca raspunzi la toata lumea si ca acorzi putin timp pentru fiecare persoana in parte. Cum vezi tu aceasta comunicare cu oamenii care te simpatizeaza?

Andrei: Ma simt foarte bine cand vad ca la concursurile nationale si internationale sunt persoane care imi sunt alaturi si ma incurajeaza. Imi face placere sa comunic cu cei care imi sunt alaturi si, desigur, incerc sa-mi fac putin timp pentru fiecare.

• medalie de argint la individual compus;
• medalie de argint la sol;

Ii multumim lui Andrei pentru timpul acordat si ii dorim mult succes in tot ceea ce va face. Suntem siguri ca isi va indeplini visul si ca in curand il vom vedea pe cea mai inalta treapta a podiumului si in competitiile seniorilor. Multa bafta, Andrei!!!
