She was fierce. She was force. She was talent. She was determination. She was imperial.
Proof? She and Yelena Shushunova are the only two gymnasts to have won the Grand Slam of all-around titles: Olympics, World Championships, World Cup and European Championships. Maybe the best example of self-control and calm is illustrated when she stuck the landing from an uneven bars exercise while the apparatus fell apart.
What kind of inner force does it take to think only to your routine, perform it at your absolutely best when you know something is wrong with the apparatus and maybe a life-threatening injury is just a few inches away? That is what fighters do best: fight, survive and, in her case, win medals, mostly gold.
