Aliya Mustafina on bars – perfect geometry

Usually, we dont post about gymnastics from other countries, but this time I’ll make an exception because the routine I want to speak about really impressed me. In the last few days I have watched 3 uneven bars routines from Aliya Mustafina, the ones she performed at the Russian Nationals. Day by day her routine became better and better and, watching her on bars, you could feel how much she missed gymnastics and especially competitions after so many months since she had injured her knee. Maybe she is not in full shape on vault, beam or floor, but there’s another story with her  bars. There are some other great bar-workers in the world (such as: Beth Tweddle, Gabby Douglas, Anastasia Grishina or Viktoria Komova), but from my point of view no one can compete with Mustafina right now.

Mustafina

She owns that piece of apparatus, she attacks every skill of it and she knows how to deliver each time a strong performance. We all know her routine is not an easy one, but she really makes it look effortless. Right now her bars routine is a bit different from the ones from the past. First of all, she took out the Tkachev  (smart move, if you ask me) and added a new combination for her Pak salto. The only thing I miss is her half turn stalder from the low bar because the way she was fixing that element in handstand had the wow factor. But definitely, right now, her stalder Khorkhina is much more efficient for her D score and I have to admit that it still wows me.

All I can say is that this routine should be given as an example of how you can build a great routine and, in the same time, how to increase your D score using some smart connections, which can bring you many tenths of a point, as a bonus. It would have been a great study material for the Romanian coaches too, but …

Maybe Beth Tweddle is the main contender for the Olympic title (taking into consideration all the facts), but she must keep an eye on Mustafina. She will fight for that medal too and when Aliya Fargatovna Mustafina wants something she will make it possible! Let the show begin!

Aliya Mustafina’s D score:

  • Stalder full (D) + toe-on Khorkhina (E) +0.2;
  • Inbar stalder with half turn (D) + Piked Jaeger salto (D) +0.1;
  • Inbar stalder with full turn (E) + Pak salto (D) + stalder Khorkhina (E) +0.4;
  • toe-on with full turn (D) + Mustafina (E) + 0.2;

Final score: 7.0
